Old Hickory Golf Club
Woodbridge, Virginia

At the time of its establishment in 1983, this was the only national golf tournament in the hospitality industry.  256 golfers register to play each year, and more than forty-five sponsors, including GWSAE, which since 1999 has been the “Title Sponsor,” supporting the event with funds, personnel, and/or players.  Other major sponsors include the Maryland Department of Tourism, the Hilton Washington & Towers, numerous hotel chains, individual hotels and resorts, and convention and visitor bureaus.  Funds from the event have been channeled to hospitality industry education foundations, and to date total more than $125, 000.

The tournament has been held at Turf Valley Resort & Conference Center in Ellicott City, Maryland, since 1988.  Prior to that year it was held at a number of venues in the Metropolitan Washington area.  The co-founders of the tournament were Jim Carter, then with the Los Angeles CVB, and Gus Duda, Chairman of The Duda Group, an independent events-management firm in Alexandria, Virginia.

The tournament is unique and has boasted a sold-out registration since its inception; one reason being that invitations are issued only to suppliers to the convention industry but they are required to invite a client, thereby achieving the 50/50 ratio of “suppliers” to “customers” which is so sought-after by industry event hosts and planners.
